Academic Info: Environmental History

This site is a gateway to environmental history resources. Although its main focus is on North America there are a number of links reflecting the internationalisation of the field. Unfortunately the list is missing some important links, such as the Forest History Society and the Australian Environmental History Network and some lnks are out of date or the sites included have been inactive for a while. Despite this, it is a reasonable starting point for finding environmental history material on the web.

The website of the American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) is aimed at presenting the society and its activities to the outside world. The site also provides information about conferences and workshops, programmes of previous conferences, the newsletter, awards and funding and more. The site also provides an overview of tha latest news abou the society and environmental history in North America.

Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE)

ASLE is a scholarly organisation with the aim to promote the study of ideas, and texts concerning the study of literature and the environment. Their website provides information and news about the organisation, developments in the field and publications. It also hosts a bibliography, a library of environmental writing, syllabi, and a list of internet resources.

Association of South Asia Environmental Historians

The mission of the Association of South Asia Environmental Historians is to promote the understanding of the interaction of people and nature in history, in particular in South Asia. The Association is much focussed on the Indian sub-continent and that is not suprising considering its rich environmental history. The site provides information about membership, the the annual Journal of South Asian Environmental History, links and an events calendar.

Australian Forest History Society

The Aim of the Australian History Society is to advance historical understanding of human interactions with Australian forest and woodland environments. Their website provides information about their biannual conferences and you can download thier newsletter, containing book and museum reviews, details of new publications, details of work in progress, requests for information, updates on what AFHS members are doing, current news and a calendar of national and international conferences. The site is the first stop for anyone interested in Australian and New Zealand forest history.

Australian and New Zealand Environmental History Network

The Australian and New Zealand environmental history network website, hosted by the Australian National University provides a good overview of topics that occupy researchers in Australasia. The site includes a section on forest history, an events calendar, a publications list and links to other sites. Of particular interest is the information about the Environmental History Network that links academic researchers with the government, independent scholars and others in Australia and New Zealand. A good example of the practical application of Environmental History and its interdisciplinary character.

Integrated Database in Canadian Environmental History

This resource contains a bibliography of over 25,000 citations. Using a thesaurus adapted to Canadian environmental history, over 15,000 references are indexed back to 1982 and work on adding records prior to 1982 continues.

Environmental history on the Carnegie Mellon University library site

This site presents a list of environmental and environmental history organisations. It contains Internet links to web sites of these organisations and to on-line libraries. The site contains also the contents of journals such as Environment and history.

The Centre for Research in Environmental History , Stirling, Scotland, UK

The Centre for Research in Enviromental History was originally a research initiative of the Universities of Stirling and St. Andrews, established in 2002. It was the first research Centre in the UK expressly concerned with understanding the development of landscapes and environments in the recent past, and linking these lessons from the past to assist in future land and resource planning and policy-making. At present the successor Centre for Research in Environmental History has grown into an independent research initiative run by the Department of History at Stirling but with a strong interdisciplinary focus.

Envirotech

Envirotech is a special interest group within the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) and focuses on the interrelationship of technology and nature. The group meets twice a year at the meetings of SHOT and the American Society for Environmental History (ASEH). The site is set up as a blog and provides news, essays, links and otehr resources. The group publishes two newsletters a year, which can be downloaded from the site. Further, there are the usual ingredients of sites of academic groups such as news, calls for papers meeting reports etc.

European Society for Environmental History

The site of the European Society for Environmental History is devoted to promote environmental history in Europe. The site presents information about the activities of the society such as the bi-annual conferences and publications. A neat feature are the news page providing information about events and developments relevant to environmental history. One of the most useful features of the site is the bibliography of European Environmental History. You can also register as a member of the society on the site and there is a discussion board that can be used to pose questions to the community. The site aims to provide a platform of communication between European scholars working in the field of environmental history.

Finnish Gateway to Environmental History

The Finnish Gateway to Environmental History is maintained by the International Environmental History Group (IEHG) based in the history department of the University of Tampere in Finland. The site provides information about the work by IEHG members and for undergraduate students. Useful parts of the site are a list of Finnish Environmental Historians as well as a news page and links to environmental history resources.

Forest History Society, Durham, North Carolina, USA

The Forest History Society links the past to the future by identifying, collecting, preserving, interpreting, and disseminating information on the history of interactions between people, forests, and their related resources - timber, water, soil, forage, fish and wildlife, recreation, and scenic or spiritual values. The focus of the site is from a North American perspective although within a global context. Established in 1946 and incorporated as a non-profit educational institution in 1955, it is affiliated with Duke University.

Two computer information databases are accessible through the web page of the Forest History Society: a directory of relevant archival collections and a bibliographic database. Especially the bibliographic database is a valuable search tool.

Forth Naturalist & Historian, Scotland, UK

The Forth Naturalist and Historian (FNH) is an informal body concerned with the natural and social history of central Scotland. The web site of the FNH contains the content of its principal publication, The Annual Journal of the Forth Naturalist and Historian, from 1993 onwards. In addition the site also contains information on other publications of the FNH and its annual symposium. Many of the articles in its journal and conference themes are in the field of environmental history.

It is part of H-Net, an international scholarly organisation dedicated to promoting the scholarly use of the Internet and electronic resources. The H-Environment site is supported by the leading organisations in the field such as the ASEH and the European Society for Environmental history.

The site provides a range of resources valuable for everyone interested in environmental history. It includes historiography’s of Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America, Course syllabi, book reviews and much more.

History and Sustainability - Research and resources for environmental history and education for sustainable development

This site provides resources and links to those interested in more closely learning from, and enriching the humanities and history in particular in our understanding of the long history and possibly long future of human and environmental interactions.

The History and Sustainability project seeks to bring together environmental, economic and social historians, historians of political thought, anthropologists and others to address these questions. The homepage of the Institute for Environmental History of the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) presents information about the institute and its activities. 'About the institute' is an intersting one for anyone interested in the development of environmental history in Europe. It contains a brief history of the Institute since its foundation in the early 1990s.

The option 'Staff' is linked to a page that gives a short description of the activities of the research and teaching staff of the Institute. This item is closely related to the next two contents on the homepage 'Research publications' and 'Thought courses'. Anyone considering studying environmental history should have a look at these pages. A feature of particular interest is the list of seminars.

This site provides the visitor with a good summary of the activities of the Institute for Environmental History. The Institute is a partner in the AHRC Centre for Environmental History and Policy, a joint undertaking with the University of Stirling.

The Institute for Rural History (Institut für Geschichte des ländlichen Raumes) at St Poelten in Austria, focuses on the study of rural areas and communities in historical perspective. For those who can read German this website provides some very useful resources on rural history in Austria. The site includes a Rural History Newsletter with information on new publications, conference announcements, workshops, new websites and other news related to rural history, environmental history, history of science and related fields. Furthermore the site presents information on the Institutes publications, research projects, seminars and workshops and a list of relevant links. The History of Land Utilisation and the development of Rural Society in New Zealand. This site gives some idea of the work of Tom Brooking and his research group undertaken in the history department at the University of Otago. The site provides an overview of their research interests including responses to and representations of the changing landscape; land settlement; the impact of farming upon landscape and indigenous people; the impact of goldmining on rural landscapes; environmental history and the history of forestry in New Zealand and the Pacific.

The Sea and the Cities. A Multidisciplinary Project on Environmental History.

The Sea and the Cities website presents the results of a project that studied the environmental history of urban water pollution and protection in the Baltic Sea region in the 19th and the 20th century. Altough thhe title suggests a wider merit the site is strongly focussed upon tow aspects of water pollution: the consequences for cities surrounding the Baltic Sea and marine life and the development of waste water treatment. Articles on these topics can be downloaded as PDF files. A good source for material related to water pollution issues in the Baltic region.
